The Glenturret: Scotland's Oldest Distillery
Distilling has gone on at this spot in Perthshire, on the banks of the Turret River, since 1763, which is why Glenturret gets called Scotland's oldest working distillery, a title a few other distilleries also claim, though Glenturret's case is one of the stronger ones.
For decades the whisky made here mostly disappeared into blends, and the site was better known to visitors as home of the Famous Grouse Experience than as a single malt in its own right. That changed in 2019, when the French luxury group Lalique bought the distillery and brought in whisky maker Bob Dalgarno, formerly of The Macallan, to build out a proper single malt range.
It's worked: Glenturret's Triple Wood took Best in Show at the IWSC with a score of 99 out of 100, though that exact release is currently sold out at Threshers in both its 2022 and 2023 vintages. What is in stock runs from a 7 Year Old up to a formidable 30 Years Old at £1,790, for anyone after a serious gift or a serious treat.
Worth noting if peated whisky is your thing: Glenturret announced in late 2024 that it's phasing peat out of production from 2025 onwards, so the Peat Smoked expressions currently available here are from one of the last few vintages made this way.
